Wilmington Overview

A town covering 9.14 square miles, Wilmington, California is a bedroom community of Los Angeles. Featuring a heavy concentration of industry, Wilmington has the third largest oil field in the U.S.

What is the history of Wilmington?

Located in the Los Angeles Harbor region, Wilmington joined the city of Los Angeles in 1909. With a high percentage of Latino and foreign-born residents, Wilmington draws its roots back to a 1784 Spanish land grant.

How is the weather in Wilmington?

Southern California weather is enviable to most of the rest of the country. Wilmington has a year-round mild to hot and mostly dry weather. Its climate can be classified as Mediterranean, which is kind of subtropical. Its summers are dry and winters are rainy.

How do I get around town?

If you have a car, then getting around Wilmington is a breeze. If not, then the Dash bus service is your best friend. Whether you want to travel down the Pacific Coast Highway, take a trip to glamorous Hollywood, or just get to work, hop on the DASH bus and get to where you need to go.

What is the Wilmington commute like?

If you are heading into Los Angeles to work, you can expect your commute time to be around 40 minutes, traveling north via I-110 North. If you decide to take the bus, you can expect to spend about 1 hour and 27 minutes riding.

What are the local media outlets?

To stay informed in Wilmington, just watch NBC Los Angeles. If you prefer to read the newspaper, pick up a Wilmington Daily Press Journal. When it comes to radio stations, tune in to the most popular station of all, KIIS FM Los Angeles.

Why live in Wilmington, CA?

Why should you rent in Wilmington, California? Because it is so darn close to Los Angeles. This bedroom community is a little city all its own. It has many parks and coffee shops, and has an identity all its own. Wouldn't it be nice to live somewhere where you can hop in your car and visit Hollywood and then be back home in time for dinner? Or, perhaps you lean more towards surfing at Venice Beach? Wherever your tastes run, renting an apartment in Wilmington can work for you.

What Wilmington landmarks should I see?

The two most mentionable landmarks in Wilmington are Vincent Thomas Bridge and Gerald Desmond Bridge. Vincent Thomas Bridge is a 1500 ft. long suspension bridge crossing the Los Angeles harbor linking San Pedro with Terminal Island. The Gerald Desmond Bridge is an arch bridge that has been under reconstruction for many years.

What is there to do around Wilmington?

When spending the day out in Wilmington, venture out to Wilmington Waterfront Park. It features a distinctive bridge, play areas and a community event space. You could also check out Banning Park Historic Preservation Overlay Zone, which is full of historical cultural monuments.

Any annual festivals or Wilmington events to know?

In regard to annual festivals, the Hollywood Christmas Parade is the most mentionable one. Although it isn't specifically in Wilmington, it is close enough. With a parade of famous hosts and an excellent cause of Toys for Tots, this parade is sure to warm your heart.

Where are the nearby vacation spots?

You will never run out of things to do, living in Wilmington, due to its proximity to Los Angeles. Spend the day going to Universal Studios, go to Disneyland, or check out Griffith Observatory, just to name a few examples.

Where is the best place to move in Wilmington?

Since Wilmington only covers 9.14 square miles, there aren't really specific areas that are more popular to live in than others. In my opinion, any neighborhood close to a coffee shop and park sounds great to me.
