What is the history of Winnetka?

Winnetka was founded in 1922 by Charles Weeks, a poultry farmer aiming to create an ideal society. The area has a rich history dating back to the 18th century. Originally part of the San Fernando Area, it fell under Spanish rule from 1769 to 1822 and Mexican rule from 1822 to 1846. The United States bought and annexed the area on the heels of the Mexican-American War in 1846. Soon after, Eulogio de Celes bought the former Mission de San Fernando for $14,000. This land makes up the present-day neighborhoods of Winnetka, Canoga Park, and Woodland Hills. Winnetka became more urbanized and industrialized once the aqueduct was finished in 1913. Additionally, the transcontinental railroad, completed in 1876, sparked new interest in all of California, including Winnetka. Los Angeles annexed the city in 1969, giving Winnetka new prestige and star power.
