The area was first settled by famed French-Canadian trader Louis LeFleur. It became the state capital in 1821 and was renamed Jackson after General Andrew Jackson. The city has a long-standing reputation for public transportation that harkens back to street cars pulled by mules in the19th Century. Today, Jackson enjoys an international airport, railroad, public transit system, and all manner of modern transportation conveniences.

Although many of the city’s historic building were lost during the Civil War, there are still many beautiful landmarks to take in. Author Eudora Welty’s home and lovely garden is considered a favorite destination among literature buffs. The Original First Baptists Church is also a significant structure not to be missed.

One of the trendy sports that has taken root in Jackson is roller derby and the Magnolia Roller Vixens began play back in 2008. The city is also home to the Atlanta Braves AA affiliate the Mississippi Braves and fans have the opportunity to see future Major League Baseball stars begin their careers.

The city also tips its hat to multiculturalism by hosting diverse festivals throughout the year such as CelticFest Mississippi, Crossroads Film Fest, Zippity Doo Dah Weekend, Jackson Rhythm & Blues Festival, and the Mississippi State Fair.
Where are the nearby vacation spots?
Another great aspect of living in Jackson is the terrific weekend road trips you can take around the state. Mississippi has a petrified forest in the town of Flora just north of Jackson. The Windsor Ruins to the southwest and were once a thriving plantation that became a significant post for Confederate forces and it was stormed by Ulysses S. Grant and more than 17,000 Union troops. Although an accidental fire destroyed much of its architecture, its Greek-like columns are an amazing sight. And, living in Jackson means you are less than a three-hour drive to New Orleans and the annual Mardi Gras festival.
Where is the best place to move in Jackson?
Jackson has one of the lowest costs of living for U.S. capital cities and the downtown area is a wonderfully hip place for young urban professionals. It has a thriving arts and entertainment scene, fine dining and growing commerce. There are plenty of mixed use buildings and apartment complexes. The Colonial Heights neighborhood has excellent green spaces, local shops and plenty of outdoor activities for renters as well.
