Explore Austin
The Dark Knight might be raking it in at the box office, but for a bat display that trumps even Hollywood for sheer blockbuster visual appeal look no farther than Austin's legendary bat bridge on South Congress. Located in the heart of downtown, the bat bridge is walking distance from numerous apartments and restaurants, making it a "must see" for all Austin Apartment-ites. There's even a "bat phone" (512-416-5700) to help pinpoint your best chance at viewing the spectacle. Home to almost 1.5 million bats during the main months of activity (July and August are your best bets), the winged denizens of the night take flight every evening at sunset from March until November. Crowds are large, cost is free and the experience is beyond jaw-dropping; the sight of a bat cone spiraling for miles into the distance is an amazing thing to behold. While some prefer to view from below the overpass, "au de guano" is not necessarily to everyone's nostril appeal and a hat is recommended. Premo bridge views fill up early (even on weeknights), so plan to spend an hour or two taking in the sunset over Town Lake. But trust us - by the time the last of the winged mammals explodes into the dusk in search of insects (they eat up to 30,000 pounds per night) you will be missing your new friends already. Watch out for bats by knowing the apartments near the bat bridge!
