Baltimore was founded in 1729, but the actual history of the area dates back to John Smith and his exploration of the Chesapeake Bay area in the early 1600s. In 1661 David Jones helped settlers build the colony that would become the modern city of Baltimore. Before the European settlers arrived the area was inhabited by Native Americans that dated back to the early Paleo Indians of North America. During the American Revolution Baltimore was named the capital of the new nation. It was the site of the famous Battle of Baltimore in 1812 where Francis Scott Key composed The Star-Spangled Banner. The city saw much progress and growth before, during and after the Industrial Revolution. As more trade was established using the city's many harbors Baltimore established itself as a major player in trade across the Atlantic as well as throughout New England.
