Florence, KY is one of the communities in Kentucky that is expanding at the quickest rate. Located in Boone County, Florence has a population of a little over 30,000 people, spanning a wide range of ages and demographics, including families, retirees and single professionals. There are more than 2,500 places of commercial businesses in Florence. The city provides access to large city facilities both within its boundaries, and within a short drive.

What is the history of Florence?

Florence, Kentucky is known for its Southern roots and laid-back lifestyle. In the early 1900s, the business district in Florence was bustling with businesses. A doctor's office, a metal forging shop, hotels, and a general store were just a few of the businesses in downtown Florence. Florence was also the site of the first stagecoach stop out of Covington. In particular, the fairgrounds in Florence were popular with patrons from around the region. They would flock to the fairgrounds to see livestock and products displayed. They would also participate in costume contests and hitching races. In 1836, the Covington to Lexington Turnpike was completed. This new road made traveling to Florence easier. The population grew rapidly. In 1870, 374 people lived in the Florence area. But in 1880, the number dropped to 309. In later years, the Covington to Lexington Turnpike was a major catalyst for the growth of the Florence area. The turnpike produced considerable business for carriage makers and blacksmiths. In fact, the city of Florence became one of the largest towns in Boone County.

Because Florence has a humid continental kind of climate, the weather there can range from warm and muggy to chilly and damp depending on the season. The average annual rainfall in Florence is around 43 inches, while the city typically receives approximately 18 inches of snow during the winter months. The temperature rarely gets lower than 7 degrees or gets hotter than 93 degrees during the year. Mid-summer and the beginning of October is a great time of year to enjoy Florence, Kentucky for activities that require mild weather.

Florence, Kentucky has over 4,000 street signs across more than 377 streets. It has 185.4 miles of pedestrian walkways that can also be accessed via bicycle. Most residents of Florence use their own vehicles to get around, since Florence has hot summers and cold winters, making walking and bicycling uncomfortable for many months of the year. The city also maintains a well-managed public bus system. Uber operates in Florence, as do some other companies, such as Lyft.

It has seen a 14.2% growth in population over the last decade. It is also the second-largest city in Northern Kentucky. The city is the cultural center of the area. It’s home to several parks and other recreational opportunities. The city has a low violent crime rate. This rate is 158 crimes per 100,000 residents. This is slightly higher than the Kentucky state average, but lower than the national average. This contributes to the overall safety of the city. The cost of living in Florence is affordable, too. In comparison to the national average, utilities, food, and transportation expenses are significantly lower in Florence.

What Florence landmarks should I see?

In Florence, Kentucky, there are a few landmarks, including the famous Y’all water tower that greets incoming residents and tourists to the city. The Florence Mall is an interesting place to visit and is one of Florence’s landmarks. The mall was constructed in 1976 with four anchor stores, one of which was Sears. JCPenney was also an anchor retailer, with two others that are locally known. The mall has a food court and more than 100 retailers. The previous Sears site is now vacant, and the mall's anchor retailers are now JCPenney and two Macy's outlets. The Boone County Veterans Memorial can be found in Florence, Kentucky, at 8020 Veterans Memorial Drive. This landmark is a tribute to all of the people who have served in the military in the past, as well as those who are currently serving.

Florence offers a wide variety of activities for the whole family. The Florence Family Aquatic Center is just one of the many options. Florence also boasts a professional baseball team, the Florence Y’Alls who have played at Fox Run Park since 2004. The team has won five Division Championships and three League Championships. The city of Florence is also home to several well-developed public golf courses. The World of Golf, which opened in 1969, is a city-owned facility that offers a championship-caliber course. In addition to the 18-hole executive course, the facility features an 18-hole miniature golf course. There are a variety of activities available for visitors to enjoy at World of Golf, including private parties and corporate events.

Any annual festivals or Florence events to know?

The city of Florence is home of the Northern Kentucky State Fairgrounds. The fairgrounds host a variety of events each year, including a horse show and carnival rides. The fairgrounds are decorated for Christmas and feature a charming light display. The fairgrounds also host a variety of fun activities for kids throughout the year, including games and pageants.

Where are the nearby vacation spots?

Florence, Kentucky is convenient to a lot of vacation destinations, including Cincinnati, Ohio. Cincinnati can be reached in under half an hour. The city is a large metropolis with a wide range of restaurants and entertainment options, like the Cincinnati Music Hall and the football stadium for the Bengals. Farther out of Florence is the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum and the Grand Ole Opry, both in Nashville, Tennessee. Dollywood Parks is just a four hour drive from Florence to Pigeon Gorge, Tennessee.
