Bloomington started out as an after World War II housing boom area easily connected to the nearby urban city of Minneapolis. Automobiles and telephone services started to appear. From 1940 to 1960, the city’s population grew and there was an expansion made to its infrastructure, shifting away from the small-town feel.

Bloomington public transportation is available through Metro Transit. The Metro Transit Line offers fast rail service to stations between Mall of America and Minneapolis, including service to the airport. Driving in the city is easy and residents are connected by different highways and two major interstates. The main cities of St. Paul and Minneapolis have elevated interior walkways called skywalks to connect buildings so you can walk and be protected from the winter climate.

Bloomington the fifth-largest city in Minnesota. The community is accessible from the south or north with Interstate Highway 25W and is near Interstate Highway 494 on the north and has U.S. Highway 169 to the west. Downtown Minneapolis is just 15 miles to the north so it’s an easy commute for those who want to work in the city. Downtown St. Paul is just 20 miles away and the airport is only 10 minutes away.

The Twin Cities Metro area is the 15th largest media market in the country. There are four radio stations, eight television stations, and numerous local newspapers that serve Bloomington. The Star Tribune is the 17th largest local newspaper in the United States. Other local papers include the Bloomington Sun Current and the Bloomington Briefing.

The biggest landmark in the city is Mall of America. The Japanese Garden is one of the hidden gems on the Normandale College Campus. The Bloomington Center for the Arts is the focal point for visual and performing arts for the city, as well as surrounding communities. The Minnesota Valley National Wildfire Refuge is spread out over 34 miles along the shore of the Minnesota River.

What is there to do around Bloomington?

Bloomington, MN is home to the famous Mall of America. Follow the love story of Indian warrior Hiawatha and Indian Princess Minnehaha at Minnehaha Regional Park. This is the largest park on the shores of the Mississippi River. If you come in the warmer weather and want to experience some nature, visit Richardson Nature Center. You can also take a tour of Paisley Park, the home of Prince and his recording studio.  

Any annual festivals or Bloomington events to know?

During the summer months, music and movies can be enjoyed at Lake Normandale. There are plenty of festivals in the Twin Cities area, including the Twin Cities Beer Festival and Twin Cities Grilled Cheese Festival. Bloomington Heritage Days take place in September with a parade and plenty of festivities.

There is a ski resort in your “backyard.” The Hyland Lake Park Reserve is nearby. Have a staycation at the Great Wolf Lodge near Mall of America, home to the tallest indoor water slide in the country. With the airport being so close, you can also travel easily to cities in the Midwest.
