Located in the inner coastal plain of Eastern North Carolina, Greenville serves as the county seat of Pitt County. Although the official population of the city is about 92,000 residents, there are an additional 179,000 people who live within the Greenville Metropolitan Area. What is the history of Greenville?

The city was founded in 1771 and named “Martinsborough” after the then royal governor Josiah Martin. However, the town moved to its present location along the Tar River in 1774. The name was later changed to Greeneville in 1776 in honor of the American Revolutionary War hero Nathaniel Greene, later changing to Greenville. In the 19th century, the Tar River was used for transporting people and goods and facilitating agriculture. Cotton and tobacco soon became the leading agricultural crops. A tobacco warehouse was built, and industries were set up. By the mid-1960s, East Carolina College, which later became East Carolina University opened and started admitting students. There was also economic development sparked by major industries and businesses. Today, Greenville is expanding to meet the economic, recreational, and social needs of its populace.
