San Lorenzo is located in the East Bay of the San Francisco Bay Area. What began as a squatter's community, turned into one of the first planned communities in the United States. The weather in San Lorenzo is fairly moderate throughout the year, with highs in the mid 70s during the summer and high 50s, low 60s in the winter. It is a short ride to San Francisco, and Oakland. There are many amenities throughout San Lorenzo, and the public transportation system makes it easy to live in apartments in San Lorenzo without a car.

In the 1940s, the United States Navy was under contract to build the San Lorenzo Village, with parcels set aside for retail areas, schools, parks, churches and residential areas. This planned community became a model for other communities within the United States, and it has a total area of 2.8 miles. This is an unincorporated community, and one that has a population of roughly 25,000 residents.

How is the weather in San Lorenzo?

The weather in San Lorenzo is moderate throughout the year. Although the winter months are cooler, January and February see a high of 58 degrees Fahrenheit and a low of 43 F. In the warmest months of July, August and September, the high reaches 75 F, and the low will hit 57 F. When you enjoy weather that is not going to provide you with harsh, cold winters, or hot, humid summers, San Lorenzo is an excellent place to call home. The rainiest months are December through March, while the summer months are dry.

How do I get around town?

You can easily get around San Lorenzo and the Bay Area using the BART transportation system, by bus, by train, or by car. The Bay Area Rapid Transit has 50 stations along six different routes that serve the Bay Area. You can use public transportation to get to any area within the bay, and throughout San Lorenzo. There are 45 bicycle routes throughout San Lorenzo, where you can commute to work by bike or go out for a fun ride..

What is the San Lorenzo commute like?

Commuting throughout the Bay Area is easy with the BART system now in place. Buses are also frequently running, and you can get to various areas in the bay easily. Route 880 N will take you from San Lorenzo up to Oakland. Route 17 will take you south to Santa Cruz. The commute gets congested during the prime commuter hours, and most residents of San Lorenzo choose to use public transportation to make commuting easier. Traffic can last for hours during busy commuter times.

What are the local media outlets?

Tri City Voice and the Valley Sentinel are two local newspapers that serve residents in San Lorenzo. The San Leandro Times is another local favorite. The San Lorenzo Valley Post is a local, woman-owned newspaper and online resource. Popular radio stations in San Lorenzo include KQED, 88.5 FM that is a public radio station, KOHL 89.3 FM plays top 40. KYLD 94.9 FM is another top 40 station. KISQ 98.1 FM is for adult contemporary music. KHKK 104.1 FM plays classic rock. There are many other radio stations to listen to throughout San Lorenzo. KPIX-DT1 on channel 5 is the CBS station, KGO-DT1, channel 7, is the ABC station, and KNTV-DT1, channel 11, is the NBC station. The weather is great throughout most of the year, as you aren't going to experience temperature extremes. As an area that is well-designed, San Lorenzo gives a community feel with a centralized school system, community parks, and recreational opportunities.

What San Lorenzo landmarks should I see?

The 16th Street Station is a local landmark in West Oakland, and the Spite House is a local favorite to visit. Shinn Historical Park and Arboretum, and the Historic Peralta House are two good places to visit to learn about local history. Niles Canyon Railway is another historical area to consider. The Werder Fishing Pier is a very long pier, where you can spend some time watching boats or trying to fish. There is also a Eugene O'Neill National Historic Site in the area. The proximity to San Francisco make it easy to find landmarks to visit on a frequent basis.

What is there to do around San Lorenzo?

It is easy to find things to do in the Bay Area. Whether you love nature and spend some time in a local park, or you head to the beach, there is always something going on in San Lorenzo and the surrounding area. Take a trip over to San Francisco and tour the city, go visit a local museum, or spend time shopping in the downtown area. There are farmers markets held frequently, and show venues to check out when you have the time. Visit the Hayward Japanese Gardens, or spend time at Lake Chabot Regional Park. There are plenty of hiking, fishing and swimming opportunities throughout the area.

There are many festivals held in San Lorenzo and the surrounding areas throughout the year. The Oakland Water Lantern Festival is in September, the San Leandro Cherry Festival is in June, and the San Leandro Climate Action Festival is in May. You can always find a farmers market during the long growing season, area craft fairs, and vendor markets to enjoy. The Bay Area is full of musical entertainment, and festivals are a big part of life in this area.

Where are the nearby vacation spots?

For residents in apartments in San Lorenzo, nearby vacation opportunities are everywhere. Within four hours of San Lorenzo, residents can travel to Reno, Nevada and enjoy the casinos, nightlife and scenery. Kings Canyon is about 200 miles east, and Sequoia National Park is 190 miles southeast. Pfeiffer Beach is a fun vacation spot, located about 100 miles south of San Lorenzo. There are plenty of hotel and camping opportunities within a four-hour range of San Lorenzo. From outdoor camping adventures, to city exploration, you can find a great vacation opportunity from San Lorenzo.
