Oklahoma City Overview
With its diverse culture, moderate climate, booming economy, and friendly people, Oklahoma City is an incredible place to live. And the apartments in Oklahoma City are as diverse as the people who live in them. There is so much to see and do here. Whether you enjoy trying new restaurants, exploring the arts, checking out the nightlife, or spending time in the great outdoors, it is easy to find a home to suit your lifestyle in an Oklahoma City apartment
What is the history of Oklahoma City?
Oklahoma City, settled in 1889, was originally Indian territory and became the state capital in 1907. The city began to boom when oil was discovered in the 1920s. There were so many oil wells in the city, even the capital lawn couldn’t escape them! In the 1960s the city declined as people migrated to the suburbs. The 1990s saw a revitalization of population, jobs and entertainment and the city is now a vibrant place to live.
How is the weather in Oklahoma City?
Oklahoma City is truly a four season city. Winters are generally cold with some snow. However, weather can also rise above 70 degrees occasionally during the winter. Spring is a season of moderate temperatures and frequent rain. Summer has an average temperature of 83 degrees, however, it frequently reaches the 90s, especially in August. Autumn in the city is moderately warm but cools quickly as winter approaches.
How do I get around town?
Getting around the city is a breeze no matter what mode of transportation you prefer. A decade ago it was labeled one of the “fattest cities in America”. This prompted a movement to promote walking and now it is friendly to both cars and pedestrians. EMBARK, the city's public transportation system, offers extensive options including buses, LINK (curb to curb service), Ferry Service over the Oklahoma River, Spokies (OKC’s bike share program) and transportation for the disabled and elderly. To get in and out of the city, there's Will Rogers World Airport, an Amtrack train station, and Greyhound Bus Service.
What is the Oklahoma City commute like?
An interesting fact about Oklahoma City is that it is at the intersection of two of the longest interstates in the country, I-40, and I-35. Even though these two highways run through OKC, the average commute for residents is 20.7 minutes compared to the national average of 25.8 minutes. Other major roadways include I-44 and the historic Route 66. Highways are generally congested only during rush hour and city streets are designed on a grid that’s easy to maneuver.
What are the local media outlets?
Oklahoma City carries all major television networks including ABC, CBS, NBC, PBS, and Fox. It is considered the 44th largest media market in the US and has a total of 20 local broadcast stations. The largest circulation newspaper is The Oklahoman with several smaller regional and special interest papers too. OKC also has 70 FM and 27 AM Radio Channels.
Why live in Oklahoma City, OK?
Oklahoma City is a fabulous place to call home. First of all, the people here are so friendly that the city is often referred to as “The Big Friendly”. And despite the reputation of the Midwest as “flat”, this city is actually home to rolling hills and rivers. The urban revitalization created many great restaurants and shops to experience. Pedestrian and bike-friendly paths run throughout the city. Plus, if getting out of town is your “thing” then beautiful parks and wildlife are a short drive away. There are also some very practical reasons to love this city including low unemployment, low cost of living, and lower than average commute time. Oklahoma City and its surrounding suburbs are the home to five large public universities, including campuses for Oklahoma State University and Oklahoma University. The city also has a large community college program and 15 private universities.
What Oklahoma City landmarks should I see?
In 1995, the city made national headlines when a federal building downtown was bombed. Out of the ashes sprang the Oklahoma City National Memorial and Museum, a “must-see” landmark in the city. The ASA National Softball Hall of Fame and many more museums and activities can also be found here.
What is there to do around Oklahoma City?
As a result of the “urban renewal” investment that began in the 1990s, Oklahoma City is thriving. The city is home to 12 unique “districts” including the Adventure District. Locals and tourists alike flock to this area for activities such as the Oklahoma City Zoo and Remington Park and Racing Casino. Bricktown is the Warehouse District adjacent to Downtown. It’s the hotspot for night clubs and restaurants. The city also has numerous art districts and ethnic districts to explore.
Any annual festivals or Oklahoma City events to know?
Many festivals occur in the city each year. OKC is home to the Oklahoma State Fair, which attracts almost a million visitors each September. There are seasonal festivals like the Chocolate Decadence each February and the Gazette’s Halloween Parade in October. Festival of the Arts, each April, showcases talented artists from around the country and offers a wide variety of International foods. The nearby town of Norman hosts a free music festival each year with over 100 different artists from various genres.
Where are the nearby vacation spots?
Natural beauty is also abundant and just a short drive outside of the city. 145 miles away is the Quartz Mountain Resort, a popular vacation destination. And for a day trip or weekend of hiking and wildlife gazing, Wichita Mountain’s Wildlife Refuge is an hour and a half away.
Where is the best place to move in Oklahoma City?
"With 12 distinct districts, there are options for apartments in Oklahoma City to suit any taste and style. The Midtown district, on the northern edge of downtown, is home to many restaurants, shops and neighborhood pubs. For those looking for a more ""artsy"" experience, the Paseo Arts District is a colorful and vibrant mixed-use neighborhood. OKC’s Boathouse District is a great area for the outdoor adventurer. And if you’d like to be a part of the city’s latest urban renaissance project, check out the apartments in the Uptown 23rd district. No matter your lifestyle, it’s easy to find your place in Oklahoma City."
