Salt Lake City Overview

Salt Lake City, Utah, is the capital and biggest city in Utah. Often shortened to Salt Lake or SLC, the city is home to the headquarters of the Mormon faith. SLC is relatively culturally diverse and is consistently rated in the top 100 US cities to live in. Unemployment is below national average, getting around town is convenient and the options for places to live in a home or one of the many great Salt Lake City apartments provides the folks who live here a prime spot to call home.

What is the history of Salt Lake City?

In 1847, Brigham Young and other founders of the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter-day Saints, settled in the valley and established the city. They invested heavily in irrigation and cultivated the valley to create a home where they could worship without persecution. As they cultivated the land, Young and his followers began to build the city, starting with the Salt Lake Temple on a block that would later be named Temple Square. These earlier pioneers organized a new state, Deseret, and petitioned for statehood in 1893. However, Congress declined the petition and established the Utah Territory instead. Prior to the Mormon settlement, the valley was home to itinerant Native American tribes including the Shoshone, Ute, and Paiute, who traveled through following hunting and good weather. SLC is home to Promontory Summit, where the First Transcontinental Railroad was completed in 1869, which brought many immigrant groups to the city. In 2002, SLC hosted the winter Olympics.

How is the weather in Salt Lake City?

Salt Lake City has a dry continental climate, characterized by hot, dry summers and cold, snowy winters. The late summer is the rainy season when many large storms are blown in from the Pacific Ocean by the jet stream. The average snowfall is 60 inches annually and the Great Salt Lake can contribute to lake effect snowfall.

How do I get around town?

The city is designed on a grid system and the older parts include wide tree lined streets. Due to the sprawl, many rely on cars. However, Salt Lake City has a mass transit service operated by the Utah Transit Authority which is considered to be the third best in the nation at connecting people with jobs. Public Transportation includes a bus system, light rail, and a commuter rail line. The light rail system has over 50 stops and with an average daily ridership of over 60,000. The bus system is also expansive while the commuter rail line connects Davis County in the north through the city to Provo in the south. SLC is also considered a bike friendly city and the first in the United States to introduce the Green Shared Lane concept on streets where adding a bike lane on the side of the road would not be possible. Salt Lake City International Airport is a Delta hub with over 100 non-stop destinations.

What is the Salt Lake City commute like?

Major transcontinental highways I-15 and I-80 intersect in Salt Lake City. I-215 provides a ring road around the city and the Legacy Parkway is one of the main roads to Davis County. There are only four roads that run between the two counties due to the limited space available between the Great Salt Lake and the Wasatch Mountains resulting in heavy traffic during rush hours. The surface streets are set in a numbered grid system. Each road is numbered with a north, south, east or west designation. Many named streets have a grid coordinate as well.

What are the local media outlets?

SLC residents read catch up on headlines with two major newspapers, the Salt Lake Tribune and the Deseret News and other specialized publications including Now Salt Lake, Salt Lake City Weekly, Neustro Mundo, and The Pillar. Wasatch Journal is a quarterly magazine covering arts, culture, and the outdoors. KTVX is the oldest station in the Mountain Time Zone and is the Salt Lake City ABC affiliate. KSL-TV, KUTV and KSTU are affiliates of NBC, CBS and Fox respectively and provide local and national news and programming.

Why live in Salt Lake City, UT?

Salt Lake City is nestled between the Great Salt Lake the Wasatch Mountains, providing an excellent location for anyone who enjoys the outdoors. The skiing is said to be the best in the country and during summer months residents can take advantage of warm, dry weather to hike, camp, or take part in other outdoor activities. The city is consistently ranked as very livable and family friendly. The economy is doing well with low unemployment rates and a thriving local economy of locally owned and operated businesses as well as being the national center of industrial banking.

What Salt Lake City landmarks should I see?

As home to the headquarters of The Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter-day Saints, the Salt Lake Temple in Temple Square, the historic Tabernacle, home to the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, and other sites are located in and around Temple Square. The main library has received awards for its architecture and provides a rooftop view point for the Salt Lake Valley. After hosting the 2002 Winter Olympics, Salt Lake City is home to a variety of Olympic landmarks. The Olympic Cauldron Park at Rice-Eccles Stadium features the Olympic Cauldron and the Huberman Arch. The Olympic Legacy Plaza in the Gateway District is home to a dancing fountain and a monument to the volunteers who make the Olympics possible, with 30,000 volunteer names carved into stone.

What is there to do around Salt Lake City?

In addition to the myriad of outdoors activities, SLC is known as home to several historic cinemas and film festivals. Friday night flicks are free movies presented in the summer months in city parks. Sports fans have a variety of teams to support including the Utah Jazz. This local NBA team has been to the play offs in 22 of the last 25 seasons. Residents also enjoy the MLS team, the Real Salt Lake, and minor league baseball and hockey teams.

Any annual festivals or Salt Lake City events to know?

SLC is home to an active festival culture with events occurring throughout the year, celebrating the diversity of the city. Parts of the Sundance Film Festival are held in Salt Lake City as well as a number of genre focused film festivals. The Utah Arts festival is hosted each year, attracting 80,000 visitors annually. The city is home to the second largest Pride festival nationally. The Twilight Concert series has provided a number of free summer concerts for all residents of the city for more than 20 years. These are just a few of the many cultural, musical, and environmental festivals held in the city each year.

Where are the nearby vacation spots?

Salt Lake City apartment residents can spend their vacations at nearby ski and summer resorts including Snowbird, Brighton, Solitude, Park City Mountain Resort and Deer Valley. Utah is also home to a variety of state and national parks, including Zion and Bryce Canyon, which are known for its outstanding natural beauty. Those looking for a bit of glitz can visit Las Vegas easily by taking a scenic 5 hour drive or a short flight.

Where is the best place to move in Salt Lake City?

Sugar House in the south east is popular with upper middle class homeowners and hipster shoppers. Many apartments are being built here, with over 1000 new dwellings in development. The Avenues, just south of Downtown is a historical district with many Victorian era homes. Known for intimate restaurants like Avenues Bistro on Third and Jack Mormon Coffee and shops, the Marmalade District west of Capitol Hill is an eclectic and desirable neighborhood benefiting from gentrification. Smaller neighborhoods are named for the closest major intersection. 9th and 9th for example is known for art galleries, independent retail, salons, restaurants and coffee shops.
