Fredericksburg Overview

Fredericksburg, Virginia, is a vibrant city located less than 50 miles outside of Washington D.C. Living here allows you to enjoy an idyllic lifestyle, as you’ll always be near beautiful natural landscapes and cultural attractions galore. The apartment homes in Fredericksburg add to the magic of living in this region. Many of the top rental properties feature open floorplans, quality appliances, and all the amenities you could want, including fitness centers and swimming pools. You’ll get to enjoy being within walking distance of all the top-notch shops and restaurants in the downtown hub, too.

What is the history of Fredericksburg?

Founded in 1728, Fredericksburg has a rich history shaped by its role in the American Revolution. Many Revolutionary War generals came from this area, like George Weedon and Hugh Mercer. George Washington’s brother-in-law Fielding Lewis even owned and operated an arms factory that contributed to the war efforts.  If you want to look into the past, you can visit many historical sites, including the Confederate Cemetery, Mary Washington House, and Kenmore Plantation and Gardens. The James Monroe Museum and Memorial Library has artifacts dating back to the start of the town, allowing you to see how the city grew through the years.

How is the weather in Fredericksburg?

When living in Fredericksburg apartments, you get to enjoy all four seasons. The humid subtropical climate brings plenty of cool days during the winter and heats up nicely in the summer. The fall and spring seasons offer mild weather that’s perfect for walking through the parklands. In the winter months, temperatures drop to the mid-30s, resulting in about 16 inches of snow per year. In the summer, temperatures rise into the 90s, although the humidity often makes it feel even warmer than that. The region gets about 40 inches of rainfall per year and the occasional fast-moving storm.

How do I get around town?

You’ll likely find navigating through the city rather convenient whether you own a car or use public transportation. Car owners can typically travel all the way across town in less than 15 minutes. Peak hours rarely add more than 10 minutes to that commute. If you prefer public transportation, Fredericksburg Regional Transit can take you where you want to go. The bus system offers basic weekday service, Railway express feeder bus service, and late-night service on select days of the week. The Downtown area is highly walkable, making that a great place to find an apartment in Fredericksburg. If you want to get out of town, both the Richmond International Airport and Washington Reagan National Airport are just 50 miles away.

What is the Fredericksburg commute like?

With Interstate 95 running right along the city, Fredericksburg residents enjoy easy commutes into Washington D.C., and beyond. Route 1 serves as an alternative route to the north and south, but it’s usually fairly traffic-heavy during peak travel hours. The excellent road infrastructure design throughout the city proper keeps local traffic moving at a steady rate. The most congestion occurs on the major arterials, like Fall Hill Ave, Carl D Silver Parkway, and Plank Road. Taking the smaller streets doesn’t save much time, so residents usually just turn up the tunes and work their way through heavy traffic.

What are the local media outlets?

You have access to many excellent newspaper publications, TV stations, and local radio stations while living in apartments in Fredericksburg. Breaking news comes by way of The Free Lance-Star, which comes in both print and online formats. If you prefer to watch the news instead, you can tune into WWBT, WRLH, WRIC, or WTVR for the latest local updates. Five local radio stations deliver the greatest hits alongside the inside scoop about what’s going on in the area. All these media outlets go beyond the news to share information about upcoming events and other happenings.

Why live in Fredericksburg, VA?

Many things bring people from far and wide to live in Fredericksburg. Quick commutes to Washington D.C. are a major factor, as is the proximity to Richmond, Virginia, to the south. Residents enjoy living less than two hours away from the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean beyond. The rich history of the region is endlessly captivating, even if you’re not a history buff.  And when you’re not exploring the historical sites, it’s easy to find something fun to do right in town. Want to make the most of your explorations? Hop on a trolley tour to see it all from the tourists’ perspective.

What Fredericksburg landmarks should I see?

The top landmarks in Fredericksburg include the Rising Sun Tavern Museum, George Washington’s Ferry Farm, and Chatham Manor. All these sites offer a glimpse into the history of the area while making for a fun day out of the house. Although the historical sites dominate the landscape, that’s not all there’s to see and do. Walks through the University of Mary Washington campus are always a delight, especially if you appreciate beautiful architecture and plant life. Cossey Park, Cowan Boulevard Trail, and other local parks are must-see landmarks as well, especially during the leaf-peeping season.

What is there to do around Fredericksburg?

It’s easy to find something to do whenever you feel like heading out of your apartment to see the world around you. You can start your day in Old Town with window shopping, friendly chats with your neighbors, and ice cream in all your favorite flavors. If you’d like to enjoy fishing, you just have to head over to the City Dock, which stays open year-round. Prefer taking a dip in the pool instead? You can always count on Doris E. Buffet Swimming Pool to serve as your go-to spot for fun in the sun. To finish off your day, hit the Fredericksburg Roller Hockey Rink for a pickup game or two.

Any annual festivals or Fredericksburg events to know?

Downtown Fredericksburg serves as the perfect spot for festivals, parades, and many other community events. In the summer, there’s the Fourth in Fredericksburg Arts & Crafts Show. The Lake Wilderness Freedom Fest happens the weekend afterward for even more Fourth of July fun. In the winter, it’s all about the Christmas Parade. Other event centers include The Fredericksburg Expo & Conference Center and the Agricultural Fairgrounds. Depending on the month, you may find the Coffee & Chocolate Festival, Cider Festival, or Bourbon and Beer Festival in full swing.

Where are the nearby vacation spots?

You’re never far from fun day trips and weekend getaways while living in Fredericksburg, Virginia. If you’d like to get back to nature without going far from home, set your sights on a visit to Lake Anna State Park. Located just 30 miles away, this lake has cabins and campsites you can rent by the day or week. You can then enjoy hiking through the forest, swimming in the lake, and so much more. Even more adventures await along the Chesapeake Bay and the coast of Virginia. You cannot go wrong with a trip to Norfolk, Virginia Beach, or Gloucester Point for the weekend or longer.

Where is the best place to move in Fredericksburg?

Fredericksburg apartments are in many charming neighborhoods, like Eagle Village and the Downtown area. If you like to live in the middle of all the action, look at the residences along Fall Hill Avenue. Living in that neighborhood puts you within walking distance of the top eateries, shopping centers, and entertainment venues. If you prefer a quieter living experience, the apartments along Cowan Boulevard might serve you well. There are also many excellent rental units to consider around the University of Mary Washington campus.
