While apartment living certainly affords certain luxuries (swimming pools, on-site gyms and washer/dryer setups are generally pretty standard), one thing you are unlikely to encounter is a wide variety of, well, wildlife. Unless you count that bizarre mutt that looks like the result of a romantic encounter between a Great Dane and a Pug, or the crazy lady in 3B that enjoys dressing her cat in toddler's clothes, odds are good you'll need a trip to the Houston Zoo to get your fill of exotic critters. And 'exotic' is certainly the name of the game here. Want a new spin on man's best friend? Check out the rare African wild dogs (a four-toed cross between a domestic and a Timber Wolf). Or if you are missing your ex, try visiting the other cold blooded rock dwellers at the Reptile House, where you can get face to face with a Black Forest Cobra, Komodo Dragon or Blanco the White Alligator (one of only fourteen alive!) Over 4,500 animals in all inhabit the zoo, including bears, monkeys, elephants and an assortment of big cats (tigers and lions) that are all thankfully free of Osh-Kosh-B'Gosh gear. Low priced at only $10 and open at 9 a.m. every day of the year except Christmas, the Houston Zoo is a welcome respite the next time you start to feel like checking in to the monkey house.
