Jacksonville was founded in 1822 by Isaiah D. Hart. Hart and the other settlers named the town after General Andrew Jackson, who they considered a hero for invading Spanish Florida. Two of Jacksonville's streets are named after Hart's daughters Julia and Laura, and Ocean street is named after his son Ossian, who became the tenth governor of Florida in 1873.

Like the rest of Florida, Jacksonville experiences warm and cool seasons, but Jacksonville's warm temperatures are generally not as extreme as the temperatures in the central and southern parts of the state. Jacksonville's warm season generally lasts from late May to late September, with the highest temperatures averaging around 85 degrees Fahrenheit. During the cool season, the average high temperature is around 68 degrees Fahrenheit. Jacksonville experiences occasional light rainfall throughout the year, and thunderstorms during the summer.

You will most likely need a car to get around Jacksonville because the city is so large. However, if you live downtown, you will be within walking distance of many amenities. Jacksonville has a city bus system that is great for getting around town, and several taxi companies also serve the city. The Skyway is a free transit system that stops at eight stations throughout the city. The Jacksonville International Airport serves the Greater Jacksonville area.

Jacksonville has big-city traffic that can sometimes add extra time to commutes depending on where in the city you need to go. The major highways in Jacksonville are I-95 and I-10. I-95 runs north and south through Jacksonville, and I-10 runs east and west, terminating at I-95 in Jacksonville. The intersection of I-95 and I-10 is one of the highest traffic areas in the city. I-295 also runs around Jacksonville and serves as a connector between I-10 and I-95.

Daytona Beach is about an hour and a half drive down I-95 from Jacksonville. The Daytona Beach boardwalk has rides and arcades, and is home of the famous Daytona 500 NASCAR race. Orlando, home of Disney World and Universal Studios, is about a three hour drive from Jacksonville. Or you could head north to visit historic Savannah, Georgia, just a two hour drive from Jacksonville.

Jacksonville has many desirable neighborhoods throughout the city and in the suburbs. The Northside neighborhood is one of the most rural neighborhoods near Jacksonville, with a family-friendly suburban atmosphere. To the south of downtown, the Riverside, Avalon, and San Marco districts have a young, bohemian, and artsy vibe, while the Southside area is an up and coming suburban area.
