Though severe weather and thunderstorms are common during the spring and early months of summer, fall and winter tend to be more mild. For longer trips, residents can either catch a Greyhound bus downtown, or grab a plane out of the Tulsa International Airport, just 9 miles northeast of downtown. Tulsa is home to the historic Route 66 highway and Interstate 44 heads northeasterly through downtown Tulsa toward Springfield, Missouri. Other major roadways include US 75 which heads north-south and US 412, which moves east-west across the belt of Oklahoma. The Broken Arrow Expressway overlaps with Highway 51 and connects the southeastern areas of the region with downtown. Though rush hour traffic can slow commuters down during lunchtime and the later portions of the afternoon, local news stations like KJRH monitor traffic conditions regularly and provide live traffic updates.
