West Palm Beach Overview
Long known for its pristine white sand beaches and the calming waves that accompany them, West Palm Beach is considered one of the 'big three' cities in the southern Florida area, and is also the oldest municipality in the metropolitan Miami vicinity. On the rise in terms of economic growth and popularity, this Sunshine State hot spot with a wide variety of options in West Palm Beach apartments is a fantastic place to call home.
What is the history of West Palm Beach?
While its history dates back hundreds of years, West Palm Beach flourished as a city during the early 1920 real estate boom of Florida. The return of soldiers from the ravages of WWII saw yet another increase in population within the region, and shopping and entertainment development throughout the 1960s and 1970s continued to help the West Palm Beach scene expand. While the Great Recession of recent years has taken a toll on the city, its proud residents have continued to bounce back, with newly revitalized areas increasing with each passing day.
How is the weather in West Palm Beach?
A smaller city of less than 60 square miles in total, West Palm Beach apartments nevertheless experience more than their fair share of warm, muggy temperatures. Indeed, wetlands cover a large amount of the geography, and the city claims a rain forest-like tropical climate for much of the year. Rainfall is commonplace, and the summers can prove extremely humid. November through April is largely dry, however, and can be quite pleasant, with temps rarely falling below the 60 degree mark.
How do I get around town?
While most residents rely upon a personal vehicle to get around, West Palm Beach's ideal flat terrain has made it 'one of America's most bike-able cities'. A tri-rail system offers easy access to much of the city, and a free downtown trolley rounds to and from the waterfront district. Greyhound buses can be found with ease as well, and the Palm Beach International Airport is one of the busiest in the nation, serving over 52 million passengers each year on average.
What is the West Palm Beach commute like?
U.S. 1 is the primary highway that runs through the city, although I-95 is well used as well. Florida's Turnpike traverses the western end of the city, and the daily commute can get a bit snarled during peak morning and evening rush hours. Overall, however, most residents of West Palm Beach apartments can expect a reasonable drive time on typical days.
What are the local media outlets?
A number of print newspapers still call West Palm Beach home, including the 'Post', 'Daily News' and the popular 'South Florida Sun-Sentinel'. The city is served by a large number of broadcast affiliates as well, with programming from NBC, CBS and more readily available. Radio programming is diverse and omnipresent, from hip-hop to classical, talk to modern rock.
Why live in West Palm Beach, FL?
A small-scale city that's big on heart and opportunity, apartments in West Palm Beach represent a growing number of south Florida hot spots on the rise. While tourism accounts for a good deal of the city income base, West Palm Beach's close proximity to Miami and a number of other large municipalities make it an ideal commute for those desiring a big city job market while maintaining a cozy home life.
What West Palm Beach landmarks should I see?
The Bel Air Historic District certainly makes its mark as a 'must-see' hotspot, complete with awe-inspiring architecture. Flamingo Park was originally a pineapple plantation, although it currently acts as a luxurious destination for those craving water views. The Johnson Museum is a striking and enormous structure, complete with epic pillars, and the Cravis Center for the Performing Arts is a fantastic place to take in a night of theater.
What is there to do around West Palm Beach?
The Carefree Theater dates back to 1940, and is still a hugely popular place to take the family for a night of live stage performance. Rapids Water Park and the West Palm Beach Zoo are both popular family destinations, while the International Polo Hall of Fame is undeniably the place to be for fans of the sport.
Any annual festivals or West Palm Beach events to know?
West Palm Beach is home to a number of festivals, including SunFest (which has boasted performances from the likes of Wilco and Bob Dylan) and the Barrett-Jackson Classic Car Auction, which draws hot rod enthusiasts from miles around.
Where are the nearby vacation spots?
Miami is a super short drive from West Palm Beach, making the big city nightlife and eateries well within reach. Sport fishing can be found due south on the coastline, and the theme park destination of Orlando is only a short trek away.
Where is the best place to move in West Palm Beach?
Prospect Park is filled with higher-end homes primarily inhabited by real estate investors and other business types, with Northwest dominated by families and Mango Promenade popular among college students. Regardless of where you choose, life in the city of West Palm Beach is truly one of a kind!
