Explore Baltimore
When it comes time for a beer and a meal in Baltimore, apartment-ites should search out the best they can get. Plenty of places proclaim themselves to be British pubs by smacking fish and chips on the menu and Guinness on the tap, but few places actually get the authentic taste and feel of a British pub down. Making its own brand of English ales, while also serving up the best in UK cuisine, The Wharf Rat is the top pub in town, serving up only the best in English flavors for those who really know what the public house is all about. Though they do have a few guest beers on draft, most of the beers served at The Wharf Rat are strictly home-brews. Their Oliver line of ales is varied and interesting, and each one gives you a different kind of flavor of the wide picture of ales of the United Kingdom. Their top two are their Cask Conditioned Ales, served at a proper fifty-four degrees and dispensed by pumps, just like traditional ales in Britain. They also have their draught ales, which include their Vanilla Ice ale, their Irish Red ale, and their Bierre de Garde, their dark ales, which include their Olde English Ale and their Pagan Porter, and their smooth pour ales, Blackfrair Stout and Manchester Cream Ale. They also have a number of seasonal items that change depending on what time of the year you may arrive, but they're always smooth and delicious. Wharf Rat's food menu features traditional English items such as fish and chips with other fun sandwich and burger items, many of which are named after famous people and places of Britain. Start your meal with Victoria and Albert, warm crab and artichoke dip made for sharing, and continue with Henry VIII's meatloaf, the Sir Winston Churchill, a corned beef or turkey sandwich topped with Thousand Island dressing, sauerkraut and melted Swiss on rye, the London Tube, shrimp salad with lettuce and tomato wrapped in a flour tortilla, or the Big Ben, roast beef au jus on toast points with mashers and gravy. For an authentic British meal, apartment-ites aren't going to find anything much better in Baltimore than at The Wharf Rat, where the beers are made fresh in the British style, the food is delicious, and the ambiance and service you must see to believe.
