Ponce de Leon was one of the first but was then followed byCuban and Spanish settlers who built fishing camps on the coast. In the 1700's pirates used the area as a base, and by 1821 the United States federal government built a fort here. In fact, Ft. Myers saw fighting between the Union and Confederate soldiers in 1865.

This isn't due to the amount of traffic. Instead, it is a product of the distance most residents drive to get to work. Forty-five percent of drivers drive over 30 miles to their job location. Major highways in the area include the Florida State Road 876, 31, and Interstate 75.

There's nothing like relaxing on the beach catching up on the news or listening to music. You can do both in Ft. Myers. Radio stations include WIKX country, WXNX rock, and WINK adult contemporary.
