What is the history of Grand Rapids?

Grand Rapids was founded in 1826 by Louis Campau, a Detroit-born trader. The city expanded over time and was officially named ‘Grand Rapids’ in 1836. The first census happened in 1845 and found a population of 1,510 as well as an area of four square miles. The city grew and became a prominent furniture producer in the 1870’s, something that still influences its economy today. Grand Rapids now has a population of over 1 million.

Grand Rapids has a varied climate. In the summer, the weather is very warm and humid. In the winter, the season is quite cold and snowy. Grand Rapid’s springs and autumns are short and mild. The city’s average temperature is forty-nine degrees Fahrenheit. Because of its location east of Lake Michigan, there are many cloudy days in the late fall and winter. Flooding can also sometimes pose a problem to residents and tourists alike.

How do I get around town?

It is important to have a vehicle of your own due to the size of the city. There are walking routes in the city and plenty of them available for anyone who refers to travel on foot. Greyhound, Megabus, and the Interurban Transit Partnership provide public transportation in Grand Rapids. There is a bus station at the Rapid Central station, the Gerald R. Ford International Airport, and an Amtrak railway line. Eight passenger airlines and two cargo airlines provide 150 daily flights to twenty-three nonstop destinations in the United States. The Pere Marquette line provides direct railway service to Chicago.

What is the Grand Rapids commute like?

Grand Rapids has several major roadways. The first is Interstate 96, which is in the northern and northeastern part of the city, and links up with Detroit and Lansing to the east as well as Muskegon to the west. Interstate 196 runs east-west through the city and connects with Interstate 96 just east of Grand Rapids and Interstate 94 in Benton Township. Traffic in the morning and afternoon is sometimes heavy, but clears up later.

What are the local media outlets?

The Grand Rapids Press is the main newspaper outlet for daily news and Advance Newspapers covers community news. WOOD-TV is a major television outlet in the area owned by NBC. WOTV is also another significant outlet. There are also sixteen AM radio stations and twenty-eight FM stations serving Grand Rapids.
