Charleston Overview

Charleston is one of South Carolina's oldest cities that has a bustling population of over 100,000 people. Southern Charm and old-world grandeur still shine brightly on its cobblestone streets and colonial architecture. For the history buff and urban explorer there is plenty to discover among Charleston's walkable streets. For the foodie in you, there are enough world-class restaurants to suit all your cravings. When you choose a Charleston apartment, you place yourself in the center of a vibrant city with over 300 years of history.

What is the history of Charleston?

"Founded in 1670, Charleston's rustic colonial past and southern glamor has invited modern life into its fold. The city thrived during the age of early American colonial wealth and weathered the times of the civil war. Today it is a center for arts, food, and sophisticated culture."

How is the weather in Charleston?

Charleston, SC remains relatively warm throughout the year. None of its monthly average high or low temperatures are below freezing. It coldest month is January, with an average high of 59 degrees. Its hottest months are July and August with highs in the 90's. Fall and spring are pleasant seasons with average highs in the mid 60's to high 70's. September is one of the best months for outdoor activities, with many annual festivals taking place during this month.

How do I get around town?

Charleston's original planners have designed an incredibly walkable city. When you don't feel like walking, there are also CARTA (Charleston area regional transportation authority) buses that have routes all through the Charleston area. In the historic peninsular area, there is the Dash trolley service that makes it easy to get around the historic district. Since the average CARTA bus comes to a stop every 40 minutes, when you need to be somewhere in a hurry, it would be better to go by car. Traveling is easy with the Charleston International Airport right at the northern outskirts of the city. There is also a convenient Greyhound bus station that drops you off right in the middle of Charleston, on Dorchester Road.

What is the Charleston commute like?

Whether you are coming from the North or South, I-95 gets you near the Charleston area. Then, I-26 takes you the rest of the way, directly into the heart of the city. If you are coming from Mount Pleasant, I-526 or the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge can also take you into historic peninsular Charleston. As expected, during peak times like rush hour and holiday weekends, there will be more congestion on these main arterials, so add a few minutes to your travel time and plan ahead. Charleston's historic downtown is always a popular destination for nightlife and socializing, so expect to take it slow around this area as well.

What are the local media outlets?

When you need to grab a daily digest of the latest happenings, Charleston's Pulitzer Prize-winning The Post and Courier will fit the bill. Radio stations like Mix 96 play a blend of old and new music that is upbeat and refreshing. Mix 96 also hosts concerts at Charleston's Family Circle Cup Stadium that are open to the public.

Torin4+ years in Charleston

December 28, 2025

Lived here all 31 years of life and it’s gotten unbearable for actual locals. Too many houses being built for the rich to move here without thought for the locals who do all of the actual work to keep the city working and functional. At 31 I can’t buy a house here on my $50,000 a year salary and I barely afford living since rent is $2,000+ a month for a 2-3 bedroom apartment which is how much I should be paying for a mortgage on a nice 3 bedroom house. Traffic is bad yeah no duh when all we do is build houses for more people to move here on streets that haven’t been updated since the 70s and 80s that’s just common sense! There’s no room for more so stop building apartments that cost tooo much and houses that are out of our budget with homes starting at $500,000 no one wants your cheap construction cookie cutter HOA crap neighborhoods but the wealthy and they are coming from out of state. Build me some brick classic ranch style neighborhoods no HOA and starting rate at $280,000.

Charleston is a great place to live and work. It's a beautiful coastal area with lots of things to see and do. The downside to living in Charleston is the traffic! The combination of locals and tourists on the roads make it almost impossible to get around. It's also a bit pricey to live in the Holy City...but the charm, views, laid back lifestyle, and Southern hospitality cannot be beat!
