As soon as you step into the Wing Haven Gardens & Bird Sanctuary, you know you're in for a treat. This beautiful landscaped garden really is a hidden gem for nature-loving Charlotte apartments residents, and is located on Ridgewood Ave. The picturesque sculpted hedges and shrubs have charming slatted park benches dotted among them, and there's an eye-pleasing variety of flowering blossoms that make for a soulful, romantic stroll. The story behind the park is that a married couple named the Clarksons originally built it as a small private garden, but over time this grew into a fairytale scenery that the whole community now enjoys. They have a large variety of imported and domestic flowers, plants and herbs, including seasonal blooms such as Japanese Apricot and Rain Lilies. Both the flowers and the birds co-exist in harmony, and this adds to the rather magical atmosphere. One of the main centerpieces of the garden is their 18th-Century English sundial in the front garden, and many of the separate sections are divided with brick walls and gates covered with climbing Magnolia and Jasmine flowers. There are also a few beautifully-constructed walking paths and garden trails, amid a fountain, a small pond, a small wooded area and an outdoor fireplace. Each of the park's landmarks has a little story behind it, and the people who work there are well-steeped in the history of the park, bird care and gardening skills in general. Its function as a bird sanctuary has several species including chickadees, woodpeckers, hummingbirds and ducks, but also chipmunks and squirrels. Aside from this, the garden hosts a seasonal flower sale, and offers classes for budding gardener apartment-ites. Admission to the park is free, but they welcome donations instead. If you have some mini apartment-ites, there's a charming children's area with their own kiddie garden, but the whole park really has to be seen to appreciate just how much care and work has been put into it.
