Modesto was named for founder William C. Ralston. His modesty demanded the town be named differently, so the Spanish word for modesty was used. Situated on the Tuolumne River, Modesto became a railroad entity In 1870 and was incorporated in 1884. Using both river barges and trains to move the area’s produce, Modesto has grown fruits and vegetables, dairy products, nuts and poultry ever since.
How is the weather in Modesto?
" Modesto is semi-arid, with summer temperatures ranging from 70 degrees to over 100, with nights around 50 degrees. Winters tend to be mild and rainy. Temperatures range between 56 daytime degrees to 40 degrees at night."
How do I get around town?
A car will be necessary to navigate the city. Interstate 5 and Route 99 lead into Modesto. Route 108 exits Modesto heading east to Oakdale. Route 132 and Interstate 580 will take you to the Bay Area. Trains serving the city are the StaRT, the San Joaquin Regional Transit District and the Modesto Area Express or MAX. The airport is used for commercial shipping.
What is the Modesto commute like?
Modesto is 90 miles from Fresno, 92 miles from San Francisco, 68 miles from Sacramento and 40 miles from Fresno. Driving will take one to two hours on two to three lane highways in addition to crossing one to three bridges. Cities close to Modesto would take 45 minutes to an hour to drive. Trains might take longer due to stops on the way to your destination.

Once you get moved into your apartment in Modesto, you'll want to know the local media sources. The Modesto Bee is the daily newspaper, while the local Sacramento television stations are KCRA Channel 3, KCSO-LD Channel 33, KTXL Channel 40, and KVIE (PBS) Channel 6. If you love oldies, you will enjoy listening to KVIN 92.3. Other stations include KMRQ 96.7 for Rock, KATM 103.3 for Country, KHTN 104.7 for Hip-hop and KGIG-LP 104.9 for Local news radio.

Nine shopping centers offer all the shopping you’ll need.

American Graffiti is an annual festival celebrating George Lucas’ landmark film, filmed in the town. Music Festivals form an important part of Modesto with SummerFest and Exclamation Festival. SummerFest features big-name acts, while X-Fest covers disco and more bands. The monthly Downtown Art Walk speaks for itself.
