Based on archeological findings, Native Americans have lived in the Redmond area for at least 10,000 years. In the 1870s the first European settlers arrived and called the area Salmonberg because the nearby streams and rivers were full of the fish. In 1881 the town was renamed Melrose but one of the original settlers, Luke McRedmond, successfully changed the name to Redmond in 1883.

Traffic can get congested during rush hours on WA-520 and Interstate 90 between Redmond and Seattle. WA-520 runs through the heart of Redmond, turning into Avondale Road in the northeast section of town. The city relies mainly on a grid system with numbered streets running east to west and avenues running north and south.

People who love to be out on the water can boat on nearby Lake Washington or Lake Sammamish, or spend the day at Idylwood Beach Park.
