The largest city in the great state of Kansas, Wichita boasts enough amenities, cultural hotspots and all-around fun that the city's continued popularity should should come as little surprise. Warm, welcoming and more than just a little bit country, apartments in Wichita have much to offer prospective new residents.

What is the history of Wichita?

Initially a trading post stop in the 1800's, Wichita has grown steadily over the years to become the thriving metropolis status it currently holds. The discovery of natural gas and oil in 1915 led to a great influx of population to the city, and the economic boom due to these natural fuels led to Wichita becoming a go-to location for many new industries, including airplane manufacturing. Proudly known as the 'Air Capital of the World' due to its strong foundation of industry from businesses such as LearJet, Airbus and more, Wichitahas evolved into the workforce and cultural hub of Kansas. Re-development of older neighborhoods throughout the city was initiated in the 1990's and continues to this day.

How is the weather in Wichita?

Firmly planted in the Great Plains and thus miles from any body of water or mountains to speak of, Wichita weather tends to be a cross-section of highs and lows. Summer can be quite hot, while the winter months can be bone-chilling, and storms during both seasons are occasionally known to be severe. Snow is commonplace most winters, and the spring and fall can be quite blustery, so pack a hat!

How do I get around town?

Wichita offers a number of public transport options for residents, from the area Transit Bus (which lays claim to over two million rides per year!) to a pair of airports that offer domestic flights from agents such as Delta, Allegiant and Southwest. Cars are the most popular mode of transportation for residents, with a majority of those living in the Wichita area claiming ownership of at least one vehicle. Rail tends to largely be focused upon freight, with Union Pacific running goods in and out of Kansas regularly.

What is the Wichita commute like?

Interstate I-35 acts as the primary in and out of the city, while US Route 400 runs east and west throughout Wichita. US Route 81 also winds its way through the townships and various neighborhoods of Wichita, making it a popular option for families on the go. Commuter traffic is typical during peak rush hours, but nothing compared to larger cities such as Chicago or San Francisco.

What are the local media outlets?

The 'Wichita Eagle' has been delivering daily print news since the late 1800's, and remains the most popular newspaper in the city and has the highest circulation in the entire state. 'The Sunflower' focuses upon student campus issues, while the weekly 'Wichita Business Journal' almost exclusively covers city-related issues and development. A number of radio stations call the city home, ranging from political talk to country music, classic rock to top 40. Most of the common affiliates for CBS, ABC, Fox and the like can be found on regional broadcasting stations across Wichita as well.

A big city with small town charm, Wichita truly does represent the best in Kansas living. Far and away the strongest job market in the state, flush with exciting nightlife options, and a great place to raise a family, Wichita apartments are a fantastic option for those considering a move to the state.

What Wichita landmarks should I see?

Steeped in historical relevance, Wichita has many hotspots to offer those on the hunt for site seeing. From the architectural spires of the Sedgwick County Museum to the Keeper of the Plains Statue, camera-worthy destinations are in no short supply. Tour the streets of Old Town, made notorious during the political struggles of the 1960's, or spend an afternoon with your head in the clouds at the Kansas Aviation Museum. The Mid-America All-Indian Display Center is an impressive time capsule of Native-American lore, complete with a living history museum. The Holmes Museum of Anthropology is one of the most highly regarded of its kind, and the Wichita Airforce Base Airshow simply is a must-see.

What is there to do around Wichita?

Known as a shopping hub of the state, Wichita has plenty of stores to meet every budget. A wide array of cuisines are represented in the area restaurants as well, and the Orpheum Theater has been delivering live music to the stage since 1922. The Wichita Grand Opera is a hugely popular draw, as is the Wichita Art Museum, which collects over 7,000 individual works and is the largest of its kind in the state. Get wild at the Sedgwick County Zoo, spend an afternoon with a picnic and a good book at the McAdam's Park, of cheer on the Wichita Thunder hockey team. The local Botanical Gardens are a great way to get closer to nature, and a number of area Wichita apartments offer easy access to the Intrust Bank Arena, where over 15,000 fans gather for large-scale music and sporting events.

Any annual festivals or Wichita events to know?

Wichita is flush with yearly festivals, including such popular draws as the Wichita River Festival, running every year since 1972 and gathering crowds are large as 300,000. The Tallgrass Film Festival brings together over 100 cinematic entries, and the annual Ren Faire brings together more knights and wizards than seemingly possible.

Where are the nearby vacation spots?

RV life is popular in Kansas, and a large number of scenic, beautiful sites cater to this growing trend. Camping is also an easy weekend getaway, while I-35 makes road trips a breeze. Denver is a reasonable drive from the city and makes a fantastic family trip, while the college town ambiance of nearby Lawrence also lends itself well to a quick getaway.

Where is the best place to move in Wichita?

The downtown area of Wichita is arguably the most scenic, with rare water views thanks to the Arkansas River. Old Town is the nightlife epicenter, complete with dance clubs, movie theaters and restaurants, while a large number of families tend to migrate to the calm northwest area of Riverside. College Hill, unsurprisingly, is largely student dominated. One thing is for certain, wherever you end up - life in Wichita is second to none.
