El Paso Overview

El Paso is perhaps the most well-known border town in the United States. Located on the Rio Grande, sandwiched between the southern tip of New Mexico and Mexico, the city combines with Ciudad Juarez and Las Cruces, New Mexico to form the Paso del Norte region. It is the largest bilingual workforce in the western hemisphere, and it contains more than 2.7 million people. El Paso apartments are always in hot demand as the city is the metropolitan center of a region spanning roughly 300 miles in every direction. It is known as the most peaceful and harmonious blending of cultures in the world.

What is the history of El Paso?

Few know that El Paso is actually the oldest European settlement in the United States. First discovered by Spanish explorers in the mid-1530s, the settlement was a small village persisted for over 50 years before the founding of Jamestown. Through its long history its government changed many times, from Spanish settlers to New Mexican missionaries to the Mexican government and finally Texas. In 1850 it officially became Texas territory, and has remained within those borders to date.

How is the weather in El Paso?

There’s a reason they call it the Sun Bowl. Sitting in the middle of the Chihuahuan Desert, El Pasoans enjoy an excess of 300 sunny days a year. Average rainfall is around 10 inches. While summers can get hot, breaking 100 degrees 30-50 days between May and September, winters are among the most mild in the country. Freezing temperatures and snow are very rare, and the temperature is perfect for outdoor fun almost all year long.

How do I get around town?

Like most cities this far west, El Paso is a car type of city. While there is no metro rail to use, the Sun Metro is a capable bus system. For the most part, you want to have a car to have full access to the city, but walking is pleasant and optional in many cases. The El Paso Airport connects international flights to the city, so vacations, getaways and business travel are easy to plan.

What is the El Paso commute like?

El Paso is basically split in half by the Franklin Mountains, so getting from the east side to the west and vice versa comes with limited options. Transmountain Road cuts right through the mountains, letting cross over fairly quickly while I-10 takes the long way around, passing through downtown right where the range stops. Highway 54 and the new Loop 375 make getting around the ever expanding east side much faster and easier.

What are the local media outlets?

The El Paso Times is the biggest source of published news in the greater metro area. Most over air networks are housed in the city, so major broadcasters and news outlets are focused on the city. Radio stations are fun and diverse with 95.5 providing rock, 102.1 and 104.3 keeping up with pop and hip hop and a host of mariachi coming over the border from Juarez.

Why live in El Paso, TX?

People who stay in El Paso do so for the low crime rate, cultural diversity, low cost of living, affordable health care and education and the strong sense of local pride. The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) is nationally famous for sports programs, medicine and engineering. It also plays host to the Sun Bowl, one of college football's largest and oldest bowls. Of course the food is amazing too. No city in the country offers better options for authentic, traditional Mexican food. Only an hour drive away from the chile capital of the world, restaurants like L & Js and Chopes will ruin you for Mexican food anywhere else.

What El Paso landmarks should I see?

El Paso is home to the oldest downtown in the United States. There you can find a rich history at sites like the famously haunted Camino Real Hotel or The Plaza, which is the very first Hilton hotel ever built. Of course there are the Sun Bowl and the Don Haskins Center, two of the most iconic arenas in all of college sports.

What is there to do around El Paso?

El Paso is never short on fun or adventure. The Chihuahuas are the local baseball team with a full summer schedule. The El Paso Symphony and El Paso Opera are dazzlingly excellent with performances throughout the year, and the Plaza Theater hosts touring Broadway and other high-caliber shows. The city is full of fun activities from Wet N Wild to Western Playland, but one of the unique appeals is the always available day trip to Ciudad Juarez. Park downtown and walk across the border for a fun day of adventure.

Any annual festivals or El Paso events to know?

El Paso is known for its rich culture, and this is never better reflected than with annual festivals. You haven’t celebrated Cinco de Mayo until you’ve done it here. The Sun-City Music Festivals is a staple for musical events and is one of the best place to catch all of the major players in electronic music. Countless food, wine and beer festivals dot the calendar, but the Downtown Street Festival every June is the king of them all.

Where are the nearby vacation spots?

One of the best parts of living in El Paso is the nearby vacation opportunities. Big Bend is only a few hours away, so nature lovers and campers have one of the best parks in the country at their disposal. In the winter, a short hour-and-a-half drive will get you to Ruidoso, where you can enjoy a winter wonderland mountain town and world-class skiing.

Where is the best place to move in El Paso?

When you look at apartments in El Paso, your top concern is getting in the right area. Commuting daily from the west to east side, or the other way around, can be draining. The newest and prettiest part of town is the far east side, but if you enjoy the rich history you might want something closer to downtown. The whole city is a single district, so rather than aiming for “the best suburb” you should just guage apartments by how far they are from where you work. The good news is that crime is the lowest in the country no matter which neighborhood you pick, so it’s mostly a matter of choosing between historic neighborhoods or newer developments.
