Fort Lauderdale Overview

Fort Lauderdale, Florida is a beautiful ocean front city on the southeastern coast of Florida. Located just north of Miami, this city is known for it’s beautiful beaches, yachting, and a hot spring break destination. More than that it is home to over 165,000 people who enjoy its bright weather, diversity, and opportunity year round. With plenty of options for apartments in Fort Lauderdale, finding your new home here is easy.

What is the history of Fort Lauderdale?

While the Fort Lauderdale area has been inhabited for over 4,000 years, development of the city did not begin until the Florida East Coast Railroad built tracks through the area in the 1890s. The United States built a stockade called Fort Lauderdale in 1838 during the Second Seminole War and the city, when it was incorporated in 1911 was named for this fort. During the Second World War, the US Navy built a major base, as did the Coast Guard. Following the war, many servicemen and their families returned to the area, creating the city’s first major population boom.

How is the weather in Fort Lauderdale?

Fort Lauderdale is known for year round bright sunny weather. The region is prone to short bursts of rain that rarely affect the otherwise perfect weather. Hurricane season runs from June to November, with the risk peaking in September and October. Residents and businesses build their properties with this risk in mind and each season top tips to protect your homes from the weather are published by local media and FEMA.

How do I get around town?

Most residents of Fort Lauderdale drive, although the city offers accessible and thorough public transport system including buses, Tri-Rail, taxis, ride shares, and Water Taxis. The city also offers bike rental scheme where residents and guests can rent bicycles to travel around, picking up bikes at one docking station and returning them to another.

What is the Fort Lauderdale commute like?

Interstate 95 is Interstate 595 borders the main highway running north south in Fort Lauderdale and the city on the south. More than 125,000 residents of Broward County commute south to Miami for work every day, which results in heavy rush hour traffic but outside of those hours barring bad weather, construction, or accidents traffic typically flows smoothly. The Tri-Rail offers an alternative, providing quick rail service from Fort Lauderdale to Miami where residents can pick up the Miami-Dade Metro Rail service to their final destination.

What are the local media outlets?

Fort Lauderdale is home to the Sun Sentinel, the local daily newspaper as well as sharing local affiliate stations for the major national networks with Miami. There are radio stations for every taste ranging from classical, to pop and alternative, to country and Spanish language stations.

Why live in Fort Lauderdale, FL?

The Sistrunk Parade and Festival takes place every February to celebrate the citizens of African descent. Sunfest is a five-day music and art festival held on the waterfront annually. Whatever your interest or taste, there are events for you to enjoy in Fort Lauderdale.

Where are the nearby vacation spots?

When you live in paradise, it’s hard to imagine wanting to get away, but we all need a break from our day-to-day lives every now and then. Fort Lauderdale has easy access to two international airports, which makes getting away easy.
