Write a ReviewHenderson lies just 16 miles south of bustling Las Vegas, but has a much quieter atmosphere and several neighborhoods of quiet suburban life. It offers beautiful mountain views, and evenings that are cold enough to cuddle under a blanket with afternoons of sunshine to take advantage of abundant outdoor activities.
Henderson was the site of a WWII magnesium plant that originally drew residents to the green Valley during the war. After the war, when many lost their jobs and home they moved away. After a close call with a war surplus auction the state saved the area and the City of Henderson was officially incorporated in April 1953.
Henderson gets cold at night, but during the day the lowest average temperature in this warm area reaches 42 degrees in January. The summers are hot, with average highs in July at 95 degrees with high temperatures in the 100s. Henderson gets very little rainfall, usually less than three inches total per year.
People living in apartments in Henderson need cars to take care of most errands. The area is a little more friendly for people on bikes than pedestrians, and those without cars rely on the RTCSNV bus system that offers 50 routes. McCarran Airport less than 20 miles away, and nearby Las Vegas has a Greyhound and Amtrak station.

State roads 564 and 582 run through the heart of the city, making getting in and out a breeze. Residents in Henderson get their news from the Las Vegas Sun or Review-Journal newspaper, and more local flavor from the student-run Scorpion's Tale from Henderson's Nevada State College. Music lovers tune in to KUNV 91.5for jazz, KBET790 for country, or Jelli 96.7 to get the club vibe without leaving their homes or cars.
Henderson offers big city living, quiet suburbs, and plenty of opportunities for indoor or outdoor activities. The lights of Las Vegas are just up the highway, but it is also a quick trip to quiet desert spaces and beautiful lake areas. The area is pet friendly and offers several opportunities for continued education.
Henderson is home to several colleges, including the growing Nevada State College. Nearby Las Vegas has several historic landmarks, including Brownstone Canyon and old hotels and other properties. The Henderson Historical Society collects oral histories and other information about the young city to preserve for later generations.
Like neighboring Las Vegas, Henderson is home to several large casinos and resorts, but without the traffic level of its sister city. The Henderson Events Plaza Amphitheatre is the largest in the state, with a 500-seat canopied area and 60,000 square feet of outdoor space for live music, weddings and other events. The city also has close to 40 miles of hiking trails for those who love the great outdoors.
Henderson is home to a yearly St. Patrick's Day Parade and Festival featuring live music and a car show. The Art Festival of Henderson happens each year around Mother's Day, with a focus on local artists and children's activities. The city lights its Christmas tree and offers family-focuses events at its yearly December WinterFest.
People who want a night or weekend of action go to nearby Las Vegas for live shows, amazing food from world-renowned chefs, and the vibrancy of the Strip. Hoover Dam is just 20 miles away, and people who love the outdoors can spend a weekend or full week's vacation at the Lake Mead Recreation Area just 30 minutes away, or be at that Grand Canyon in just a few hours.
The Townsite and Green Valley Ranch neighborhoods are the most walk-able in Henderson, while Southfork offers about 140 bars, restaurants and coffee shops. Green Valley Ranch is a great option for pet owners, with several green areas that allow pets to play outside. The Westgate neighborhood is close to several golf courses, casinos, and public gardens.
