Vancouver Overview

Relocating to a new home is never easy, but Vancouver, WA boasts many amenities and activities sure to make the area feel like home. The city offers residents the feel of a small town with the convenience and big-city amenities of nearby Portland.

What is the history of Vancouver?

Vancouver has been home to many people for centuries. Prior to Lewis and Clark’s expedition in 1806, the area was home to many native peoples. In 1825, the area became the headquarters for the Hudson’s Bay Company and established Fort Vancouver. Today, the area continues to celebrate its maritime roots, and is a major port for the United States.

How is the weather in Vancouver?

Like many cities in the Pacific Northwest, Vancouver sees its fair share of clouds. In summer, this keeps the temps on the cool side, with the average high in the upper 70’s. The frequent rainfall gives the area lush greenery from spring to autumn. Winters are also mild, with temperatures rarely dropping below freezing.

How do I get around town?

Vancouver is home to an extensive network of public transportation, making it possible for residents to ditch the car when they move. The buses cover most of the city and even have routes into Portland, so residents can head into the city without renting a car. Vancouver also features miles of bike paths and bike lanes.

What is the Vancouver commute like?

Commuting within the city is relatively simple. I-205 and I-5 both run North and South through Vancouver while the Lewis and Clark Highway and Highway 500 make traveling East to West easy. Numerous residential roads provide alternatives to busy streets in rush-hour traffic.

What are the local media outlets?

The city boasts three major newspapers, the Camas-Washougal Post Record, the Columbian, the Reflector, and Vancouver Business Journal. Most television channels and radio stations are based in nearby Portland, OR.

Why live in Vancouver, WA?

"Nestled along the banks of the Columbia River, the city is home to many outdoor activities, festivals, and events. The proximity to Portland makes it simple to enjoy the best ""Stumptown"" has to offer without the high cost of living. Mount St. Helens is visible on most days, and the parks in Vancouver give the area a more natural feel. The city also boasts some of the best coffee shops in the Northwest, making it the perfect home for coffee snobs and aficionados alike."

What Vancouver landmarks should I see?

Renting an apartment in Vancouver allows you to explore all the local landmarks, like the Fort Vancouver National Historic Site. If outdoor activities are more to your taste, the Vancouver Land Bridge will give you the opportunity to take in the sights and sounds of Vancouver while also teaching you about native plants and local history.

What is there to do around Vancouver?

Vancouver boasts an active arts scene with local museums and galleries teaming up to host the First Friday Art Walk once a month through downtown Vancouver. During the summer, there are plenty of opportunities to join an intramural sports team and the area’s bountiful mountain biking trails are a popular pastime for many residents, year-round.

Any annual festivals or Vancouver events to know?

On the Fourth of July, the city throws an epic firework display on the Columbia River, drawing residents and tourists alike. Celebrate Hawaiian and Polynesian heritage at the Hawaiian Festival. Explore the offerings of Vancouver’s many craft breweries at the Spring Brewfest or check out the local artistic talent at the Recycled Arts Festival in June. No matter what the season, there’s always something going on in Vancouver.

Where are the nearby vacation spots?

Every resident needs to get out of town once in awhile, and though Portland offers big-city amenities, it’s not high on the list of most Vancouverites' vacation hotspots. Get out of town and up into the trees at TreeHouse Point, located in the woods outside of Seattle. Head to Long Beach and enjoy the white sands and rolling waves during the summer. Escape the hustle and bustle of the city on San Juan Island and stay at one of the islands luxurious resorts.

Where is the best place to move in Vancouver?

Apartments in Vancouver can be found in just about every neighborhood.
