Laurel Overview

Apartments in Laurel, MD, provide residents access to a modern city that is about halfway between Washington, D.C., and Baltimore. Sitting on the banks of the Patuxent River, Laurel is a quiet, suburban like town with much to offer. It is not very large, but it is a city known for its beautiful parks, amenities, and location. For those who want to get away from the busy city life but still be close enough to commute, Laurel works well for this. It is close enough to I-95 to make navigating the entire region rather easy to do.

What is the history of Laurel?

Laurel was founded in the early 1800s as a mill town. Over time, it grew to include more expansive industry due to its location close to the capital and thriving ports. It did not take long for Laurel to become a commuter town for those working in Baltimore and Washington. With the growth of the railroad, by 1835, the city had become a prominent location to live. It has always been a very residentially focused town with a historic Main Street downtown area. That area also provides a clear view of older buildings from the middle of the 1900s when the city was very much an industrial town.

How is the weather in Laurel?

For those that live in Laurel apartments, it is easy to enjoy this area most times of the year. It has a humid subtropical climate. The summers can be very hot, with the average July temperature of 88 degrees. Winters can be cold with snow, dropping to a low of around 26 degrees in February. Springtime in Laurel brings with it rain, which helps to encourage the blooming of the season. The area gets about 105 inches of rain each year and generally just a few inches of snow during the winter.

How do I get around town?

Most people in Laurel will own a car for commuting around the city. With I-95 so close, it is easy to access Maryland Route 198, U.S. Route 1, and Maryland Route 197 to get around the region. Locally, there are a few major roadways that provide access to local service providers. In addition to this, there are two MARC train stations located in the city that provide a connection to Baltimore as well as to Washington, D.C. That includes Laurel Station and Laurel Racetrack Station. The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) also provides bus lines running through the city. Some areas are also quite walkable.

What is the Laurel commute like?

Many people live in Laurel apartments and commute into Baltimore and Washington, D.C. The commute to Washington, D.C., takes about 45 minutes along the Baltimore- Washington Parkway. For those who are planning to make the trip to Baltimore from Laurel, that journey is shorter at about 35 to 40 minutes, depending on the traffic. This route takes individuals along I-95. The worst traffic occurs in the morning from around 7 am to 8:30 am and then again from around 4:30 pm until 6 pm.

What are the local media outlets?

Laurel residents have access to a range of media outlets. For radio, Baltimore’s WYPR and WEAA provide access to news and music. Also available is WAMU, out of Washington, DC. The Baltimore Sun is the largest paper serving the community, though there is also the Laurel Leader Newspaper, which is a very small community publication. Local television channels also come out of Baltimore, providing access to a wide range of options. Channels 4 (WRC-TV/NBC), 5 (WTTG/FOX), and 9 (WUSA/CBS) are the largest.
